The Girl and the Magical Horse

This story was kindly submitted by Ella.

Once upon a time, there was an 8-year-old girl. She was out picking moonflowers for her mother on a clear, starry night. The moonlight shone on all the flowers, and suddenly, a magical horse appeared. It was blue with golden stars and had a white mane and tail. Its name was Luna.

The girl climbed onto Luna, and together they rode up to the moon. It was beautiful, with many other magnificent horses in all sorts of colors—red, green, yellow, orange, blue, purple, and white horses everywhere. Their hooves were blue, and their queen had a rainbow mane and tail. The queen gave the girl a magical flower, making the girl magical too. She received a wand, wings, and a beautiful dress. The sun was right next to them and shone brightly as it came closer, turning the night into day.

But then the sun suddenly went completely dark because the evil black fairy had extinguished it with her magical powers. The horses became frightened of the darkened sun and started to freeze. The girl and Luna flew toward the darkened sun to fight the black fairy. The black fairy fought fiercely, but the girl took some magic dust from the magical flower given by the queen and threw it at the fairy, who began coughing and rubbing her eyes. She sneezed and coughed, growing weak, and the sun started to shine again.

The horses cheered and warmed up once more. They ran happily around the moon, thanking the girl. Luna flew to the girl, who jumped up, and they zoomed down to the flower meadow where the girl had picked the flowers. Her mother was standing there, calling for her. “Where have you been, darling? You need to come home for dinner, a bath, brushing your teeth, a bedtime story, and soon, sleep.” “Hi mom, I’m right here.” Her mother couldn’t see Luna because magical horses are invisible to adults. Then the girl said, “Mom, tonight I want to tell you a bedtime story.” “Okay, I’m looking forward to it,” her mother replied, and they both went home.

When they got home and the girl was under her warm blanket, she told her mother what she had experienced. But her mother thought it sounded like a fairy tale, not something that had happened in the flower meadow or on the moon. Luna didn’t exist, she thought. But after her mother said goodnight and left the girl’s room, the girl heard a sound at the window, looked out, and there stood Luna, smiling at her.

Goodnight and sweet dreams.
