Two little bears peeked out of their den. Winter was over, and they could smell the fresh spring air. It was time to wake up and play after their long sleep.
The two bears tried to wake up their mom, but she was sleeping very soundly.
“Let’s run under the trees and play,” said Toby.
“I’d rather roll in the grass,” said Bella.
“We should ask Mom before we go anywhere,” the bears said together.
Toby and Bella went back into the den where they had slept with their mom. She was in the farthest corner. Mama Bear was still sleeping heavily. The two little bears slowly walked over to their mom and gently nudged her.
“Wake up, Mom. The snow has melted, and it’s time to play,” said Toby.
Mama Bear didn’t even move. She grunted and turned over to keep sleeping.
“What should we do?” asked Bella. “We need our mom to wake up and take us into the forest so we can have fun.”
The two little bears sat outside the den, trying to think of a way to wake up their mom.
“I know, let’s get some spiders to crawl on her and see if they can wake her up,” said Toby.
The two bears went to find some spiders. Bella was a bit scared of the spiders, but Toby picked them up on a large leaf. He brought them over to where their mom was lying.
The spiders crawled off the leaf and over Mama Bear’s back. Mama Bear giggled in her sleep, but she didn’t wake up.
“I think we should ask a noisy cuckoo,” said Bella.
The bears went out to the trees near the den. In the tree sat a cuckoo.
“Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo,” said the bird.
The two bears asked the cuckoo to follow them back to the den and call out to their mom.
“Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo,” said the bird, but Mom just rolled over and continued to sleep.
The two little bears didn’t know what to do. They had tried tickling, making loud noises, and shouting to Mom.
“I know,” said Toby. “How about something she likes to eat?”
“Honey!” the bears said together.
They ran to a beehive. They spoke politely to the bees, and the bees gave them some honey. They ran back to the den, excited to see if their mom would smell the honey.
Mom’s big brown bear nose began to twitch. Then her nose started to wiggle, and she opened one eye. The baby bears took a few steps back.
Mom Bear opened both eyes and blinked. The baby bears took another few steps back. Now they were at the entrance of the den. Mom Bear sat up and took a very deep breath.
“I smell honey,” she said.
Mom Bear was finally awake. Toby and Bella were so happy.
The little bears took a few more steps out of the den, and happily, Mama Bear followed them. At last, they had found the best way to wake up Mom!
Three happy bears bounced into the forest to enjoy the spring and have fun together.
