The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

Far beneath the sparkling waves of the sea, there stood a magnificent coral palace. It belonged to the Sea King, who ruled over the oceans with wisdom and kindness.

The Sea King had six daughters, and each one was beautiful in her own way. But the youngest princess was the most remarkable of them all. Her skin was as soft as a rose petal, her eyes were as blue as the deepest ocean, and her silvery tail shimmered whenever sunlight reached the water.

While her sisters loved singing, playing games, and decorating their underwater gardens, the youngest mermaid spent much of her time dreaming.

She dreamed about the world above the sea.

In her garden stood a white marble statue of a young boy that had fallen from a ship long ago. The little mermaid often sat beside it and wondered about the people who lived on land.

“What are they like?” she would ask.

Her grandmother smiled kindly.

“When a mermaid turns fifteen,” she explained, “she may swim to the surface and see the human world for herself.”

The little mermaid counted the days.

At last, her fifteenth birthday arrived.

That evening, she swam higher and higher through the dark blue water until her head finally broke through the surface.

The sight took her breath away.

The sky stretched endlessly above her. The moon glowed like a silver lantern, and thousands of stars sparkled overhead.

Nearby, a large three-masted ship sailed peacefully across the sea.

Music drifted through the night air.

Curious, the little mermaid swam closer.

She peered through a cabin window and saw a celebration taking place inside. Sailors laughed and sang while candles flickered around a handsome young prince.

“It must be his birthday,” she whispered.

The prince smiled warmly as his guests cheered for him.

The little mermaid could not take her eyes off him.

For the first time in her life, she felt something strange and wonderful in her heart.

But suddenly, the weather changed.

Dark clouds rolled across the sky.

The wind howled.

The sea began to rise.

The cheerful music stopped as sailors rushed across the deck.

“A storm!” someone shouted.

Lightning flashed across the heavens.

Thunder shook the sea.

Massive waves crashed against the ship.

The little mermaid watched in horror as the vessel rocked from side to side.

Then came a terrible crack.

One of the masts snapped in half.

Another giant wave struck the ship.

Wood splintered.

The vessel broke apart.

People were thrown into the raging sea.

The little mermaid searched desperately among the waves.

Where was the prince?

A flash of lightning revealed him struggling in the water.

His strength was fading.

Without hesitation, she swam toward him.

“Hold on,” she whispered.

The prince could not hear her.

He slipped beneath the waves.

The little mermaid dove after him.

She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him toward the surface.

For hours she fought against the storm.

The waves pushed them back.

The wind tried to tear them apart.

But she refused to let go.

Finally, as dawn painted the sky pink and gold, she reached the shore.

Carefully, she laid the prince on the warm sand near a beautiful temple.

The prince was still unconscious.

The little mermaid gently brushed his dark hair away from his face.

“I hope you’ll be safe,” she whispered.

Soon she heard voices approaching.

A group of young women walked down from the temple.

Afraid of being seen, the little mermaid slipped behind some rocks.

One of the young women discovered the prince.

“Someone help!” she called.

The others hurried over.

Relieved, the little mermaid watched from a distance.

Then she quietly returned to the sea.

But she never forgot the prince.

Every day she thought about him.

Every night she dreamed of him.

Eventually, her longing became too strong to ignore.

One evening, she swam to the darkest part of the ocean.

There lived the Sea Witch.

The witch’s home was surrounded by twisting sea plants and strange glowing creatures.

When the little mermaid arrived, the witch was already waiting.

“I know why you’ve come,” said the witch with a crooked smile.

“You want to become human.”

The little mermaid nodded.

“I want to live on land. I want to be near the prince.”

The Sea Witch stirred a bubbling potion.

“I can help you,” she said. “But every magic comes with a price.”

“What must I give you?” asked the little mermaid.

“Your beautiful voice.”

The little mermaid touched her throat.

Her voice was famous throughout the sea.

She loved to sing.

Without it, she would never speak or sing again.

The witch held out the potion.

“If the prince comes to love you and chooses you above all others, you may remain human forever.”

The little mermaid looked toward the distant surface of the sea.

She thought of the prince.

Then she made her choice.

“I accept.”

The witch smiled.

The bargain was made.

The little mermaid drank the potion.

A strange feeling rushed through her body.

The world spun around her.

When she awoke the next morning, she was lying on a beach.

Her shimmering tail was gone.

In its place were two human legs.

The little mermaid had become a girl.

Learning to walk was difficult.

Every step felt new and unfamiliar.

Yet she was determined.

Soon she found her way to the prince’s palace.

The prince welcomed her kindly.

“Who are you?” he asked.

The little mermaid wanted to answer.

She wanted to tell him everything.

But no words came.

Her voice was gone.

Still, the prince liked her immediately.

He admired her gentle smile and kind heart.

The days passed happily.

They walked through beautiful gardens.

They watched sunsets together.

They listened to music beneath the stars.

The little mermaid felt happier than she had ever been.

Yet one thing troubled her.

The prince often spoke of the girl he believed had saved his life.

“I wish I could thank her,” he said.

The little mermaid’s heart ached.

She wanted to tell him the truth.

But she could not.

One day, exciting news spread throughout the kingdom.

The prince was to meet a neighboring princess.

When they finally met, the prince stared in surprise.

“It was you,” he said.

“You were the one I saw when I woke on the shore.”

The neighboring princess smiled.

The little mermaid knew what had happened.

The prince believed the princess had rescued him.

His mistake could not be corrected.

Soon wedding bells filled the kingdom.

The prince and princess were to be married.

The little mermaid smiled bravely, though tears filled her eyes.

She truly loved the prince.

And because she loved him, she wanted him to be happy.

On the evening of the wedding, she stood alone beside the sea.

The moonlight danced upon the waves.

For a moment she looked toward the palace.

Music and laughter drifted through the night.

Then she turned toward the ocean.

The sea would always be her home.

As she stepped into the water, a gentle breeze surrounded her.

The waves sparkled softly.

The little mermaid felt peace in her heart.

Though she could not stay with the prince, she would always treasure the memory of the boy she had saved on that stormy night.

And some sailors still say that on calm evenings, when the moon shines brightly over the sea, a beautiful mermaid can sometimes be seen sitting upon a distant rock, gazing toward the shore and dreaming of love, courage, and the world beyond the waves.

The End.
