3 Short Halloween Bedtime Stories to Read Tonight
Three short, not-too-scary Halloween stories you can read aloud right here. Spooky enough to feel like Halloween – gentle enough for bedtime.
The Little Ghost Who Said “Boo” Too Quietly
In an old house at the end of Maple Street lived a little ghost named Wisp. Every Halloween, the big ghosts practised their loudest “BOOOO!” But when Wisp tried, only a tiny “boo” came out – so soft it sounded like a sneeze.
On Halloween night, a little boy dressed as a pumpkin got lost in the dark garden. He was scared and started to cry. The big ghosts swooped past with their loud “BOOOO!” – and he cried even more.
Then Wisp floated down beside him and whispered, “boo.” The boy stopped crying. “That’s a nice boo,” he sniffed. Wisp glowed softly and lit the way back to the garden gate, where the boy’s dad was waiting.
From then on, Wisp never worried about being loud. Some ghosts are made for scaring – and some are made for helping. Wisp glowed happily all the way home. Goodnight, little ghost.
The Pumpkin With No Face
On Halloween morning, all the pumpkins in the patch had faces – happy faces, silly faces, spooky faces. All except one. The smallest pumpkin was still smooth and round. “Nobody chose me,” it sighed.
That evening, a girl named Ruby came to the patch with her grandma. She looked at every pumpkin, then knelt down by the smallest one. “This one,” she said. “I want to give it a face myself.”
At home, Ruby carved two round eyes and the biggest, kindest smile you have ever seen. Grandma put a candle inside. The little pumpkin glowed warm and orange on the front step, and every trick-or-treater who passed by smiled right back at it.
“Best pumpkin on the street,” said Grandma. And the little pumpkin, glowing in the cool night air, thought so too.
Winnie the Witch Can’t Fly Straight
Winnie was a young witch with a brand-new broom. The trouble was, it never flew straight. It zigged left. It zagged right. Once it flew upside down into a haystack. The other witches giggled.
On Halloween night, the witches raced to the top of the old hill to watch the full moon rise. Winnie zigged and zagged behind them – and that’s how she spotted something nobody else saw: a little bat tangled in a tree branch.
Winnie zigged down, zagged around the branch and gently set the bat free. “Thank you,” squeaked the bat. “Most witches fly too fast to notice me.”
Winnie arrived at the hill last – but with a new friend sitting on the end of her broom. Together they watched the big round moon. “Maybe a wiggly broom isn’t so bad,” Winnie smiled. Then she flew home – zig, zag, zig – and tucked herself into bed. Happy Halloween, Winnie.
