Dancing in the Rain

Dancing in the Rain

The first raindrop landed on Lily’s cheek just as she stepped off the train. She tilted her head up toward the darkening sky, watching as the clouds swirled above, heavy with the promise of a storm.

“Of course,” she muttered with a small laugh, tightening her coat around her. She hadn’t thought to bring an umbrella—why would she? The forecast had promised clear skies. But life had a way of surprising her.

Much like the man now hurrying toward her.

“Lily!” His voice was warm, even through the cool evening air.

She turned to see Jake running toward her, his dark hair already damp from the drizzle. His lopsided grin was the same as always, making her heart skip a beat. They had spent years as best friends, but lately, something had been shifting between them. Something unspoken.

“You’re soaked,” she said, shaking her head.

“So are you,” he countered, amusement flickering in his eyes.

Thunder rumbled in the distance, and the drizzle turned into a steady rain. People scattered, opening umbrellas, ducking into taxis, rushing for cover. But Jake didn’t move. Instead, he reached for her hand.

“Dance with me,” he said, his voice softer now.

Lily blinked. “What?”

He pulled her a step closer. “Dance with me,” he repeated, grinning. “Right here. Right now.”

She looked around at the wet pavement, at the raindrops bouncing off the cobblestones, at the emptying street. “Jake, this is ridiculous.”

His fingers laced through hers. “You love ridiculous.”

She did. She loved the way he made ordinary moments feel extraordinary. The way he could turn a walk home into an adventure, or a rainy evening into something magical.

Lily bit her lip, then let out a soft laugh. “Fine,” she said, shaking her head. “One dance.”

Jake spun her under his arm, and just like that, the world around them faded. The rain soaked through her coat, her hair clung to her face, and her shoes squeaked on the wet pavement. But none of it mattered. All she could feel was Jake’s warmth, his steady hands guiding her, the way he was looking at her—like she was something he had waited for his whole life.

“You know,” he murmured as they swayed, “I used to think I was afraid of storms.”

Lily tilted her head. “And now?”

Jake smiled. “Now I think they’re kind of beautiful.”

A shiver ran down her spine, but it had nothing to do with the rain.

He reached up, brushing a damp strand of hair from her face, his fingers lingering against her skin. “Lily,” he breathed, his voice barely louder than the rain. “I—”

Before he could finish, she closed the space between them, pressing her lips softly to his.

The rain poured down harder, but Lily didn’t notice. All she could feel was Jake—his arms wrapping around her, the way he kissed her like he had been waiting forever to do it.

And as the storm raged on, they kept dancing, lost in a moment that neither of them would ever forget.
