The night smelled like popcorn, summer, and something electric.
Lina stood in line for the Ferris wheel with her arms crossed—not because she was cold, but because she was nervous. The fair had always been her escape. Lights, noise, candy floss, motion. Everything moved fast enough to drown out overthinking.
Until now.
She hadn’t expected to run into Noah tonight.
But there he was, three places ahead in line, wearing the same grey hoodie she once used as a pillow during a thunderstorm. He hadn’t seen her yet.
Or maybe he had.
The line moved. And so did her heart.
He turned around just as they both reached the front. The ride operator looked at them with a raised brow.
“One or two?”
Noah hesitated.
Then, softly, “Two.”
They stepped into the cart. The metal bar came down with a click that felt like fate closing a door behind them.
For a while, they didn’t speak.
The wheel creaked and lifted them higher. Below, the fair glowed like a scattered galaxy. Kids screamed from the roller coaster. Somewhere, a cover band played a slow acoustic version of a pop song.
Halfway up, Noah finally said, “I didn’t come here for this.”
Lina turned to him, eyebrows raised.
He smiled nervously. “I came for fried dough. Not… feelings.”
She laughed. “Same.”
Then silence again. But this time, not uncomfortable.
“I miss knowing what you’re thinking,” he said.
Lina bit her lip. Looked out over the lights. Then turned back.
“I’m thinking…” she whispered, “that I didn’t know how much I missed you until just now.”
The cart swayed gently as the wheel paused at the top.
He looked at her. Really looked.
And then he kissed her. Slow, uncertain, sweet.
Below them, the fair went on. But up there, nothing moved but the night air and their hearts finding rhythm again.
