In a treehouse high up in the trees, there once lived a boy named Magnus. Magnus wasn’t afraid of anything—except one thing. Magnus had a fear of heights, which probably isn’t ideal when you live up among the treetops.
One morning, Magnus was woken by a lot of loud noises. He hadn’t slept much, and could barely open his eyes, still full of sleep. He peeked one eye open and looked around his wooden hut.
“Who’s there?” Magnus asked.
He felt around the hut with his hands, trying to find his candle. He was also missing his matches.
“Where the heck are my dumb dumdum matches!” Magnus grumbled.
“Are these them?” squeaked a small creature.
Magnus was so startled he opened both eyes wide—it almost felt like they’d pop out of his head.
He rubbed his eyes, and right in front of him stood the cutest, tiniest little bird in the most beautiful colors. Magnus was pretty sure the bird had flown straight through a rainbow.
“I’m really sorry I scared you,” the little bird said sadly.
“I was looking for a place to sleep, because it was raining like crazy outside. Then the wind started blowing, and I couldn’t see a thing and got so scared—I had to land somewhere.”
Magnus just stood there, staring at the innocent little creature, until he finally stammered:
“Of course you can stay here. Forest friends are my friends. But… are you seriously scared of wind and rain?” Magnus asked, curiously.
“Well, we’re all afraid of something, right? And there’s nothing wrong with that,” chirped the bird.
Magnus shrugged and smiled at the little sweet bird. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with that at all. After all, he was afraid of heights—and now, together, they could look after each other and talk about the things they feared, until the rain and wind were gone.
