It’s morning, and you can hear the tigers stretching out long and wide, yawning so loudly their jaws almost touch the ground. You can especially hear Zeus—he’s the biggest and oldest of them all.
When the monkeys start screaming and chattering, we know the zookeepers are on their way with breakfast.
Breakfast usually includes two big heads of cabbage, a large bucket of broccoli, ten carrots, and a whole wheelbarrow full of lettuce and tomatoes. If you want the best bits, you have to be first.
But in our place, things should always be fair—so we always play rock, paper, scissors.
The capybara who wins three times gets to choose first. And I always knew Benny would pick scissors, so it was pretty easy to win.
Benny and I are the only capybaras in the zoo. But I think some new ones are coming soon, because the zookeepers keep checking on us.
They always look at me and rub my big belly. It’s just big because I’ve been eating a lot lately.
Tomorrow, they’re moving Benny to another place. They’re also closing off part of the area so people can come look at me—but I don’t know why.
Last night, I woke up with a stomach ache. It was the kind of belly pain that not even a big fart could fix.
The zookeepers came with heat lamps and blankets. They were so sweet.
But still, my tummy hurt so much. Then suddenly, I felt like I had to pee—and poof, there was a tiny baby capybara lying right there.
Who would’ve thought? Turns out, I had a baby in my belly.
Well, that’s all for now.
Goodbye from a day at the zoo.
