Once upon a time, there was a princess who never laughed. She didn’t even smile. Her father was saddened by her constant seriousness, so he promised that whoever could make her laugh would be allowed to marry her.

Clowns, jugglers, and all kinds of performers came to the castle, but no matter how hard they tried, the princess did not laugh.

Not far from the castle lived a very honest but clumsy boy with his mother. They were very poor, so his mother asked him to go out and find a job. The boy managed to get a job as a helper at a restaurant located right next to the castle.

After his first day of work, the restaurant owner gave him a dozen eggs as payment, and he ran home cheerfully.

But right in front of the castle, where the princess stood watching from her window, he tripped and fell, smashing all the eggs. Still, the princess didn’t smile.

When he got home, his mother said, “You clumsy boy! If you had put the eggs in your hat, they wouldn’t have broken.”
“I’ll do that next time!” the boy promised.

The next day, after working hard again, the boy was given a piglet as payment. He remembered what his mother had said and decided to place the pig on top of his hat. And off he went home.

In front of the castle, the pig managed to escape. As the boy ran after it, he fell into a big puddle of mud and got very dirty. The princess, watching from her window, didn’t even smile.

At home, his mother said, “Oh, what will I do with you, my boy? Why didn’t you tie a rope around the pig?”
“I’ll do that next time,” replied the boy.

The following day, the boy worked even harder, and his boss gave him a big fish. As promised, he tied the fish to a rope and dragged it behind him on the way home. Cats smelled the fish and devoured it in an instant.

The boy didn’t even notice that he was dragging only the fish bones as he passed the princess — and still, she didn’t smile.

“Oh, my clumsy boy,” said his mother when he got home. “Why didn’t you carry the fish instead?”
“I’ll do that next time, Mother,” the boy promised.

The next day, he worked harder than ever before and was given a cow to bring home. Remembering what he had promised his mother, he crawled under the cow, lifted it onto his shoulders, and tried to carry it home.

Of course, it was quite a sight as he struggled and stumbled while trying to hold the cow up. The princess saw everything from her window, and this time — she laughed. She laughed more than she had ever laughed in her life. She couldn’t stop laughing.

The king couldn’t believe his eyes. He sent for the boy and his mother, and they were welcomed at the castle with a grand celebration.

The clumsy boy married the princess, and they lived together at the castle.

And she laughed with him for the rest of their days.
