Hansel and Gretel

Deep in a quiet valley, far away from busy roads and loud towns, there was a wide forest that whispered softly when the wind passed through the trees. At the very edge of this forest stood a small wooden cottage with a crooked chimney and warm yellow light glowing from the windows at night.

In this cottage lived a kind woodcutter and his two children. The boy was named Hansel, and his younger sister was called Gretel. Their home was simple, and they did not own many things, but it was filled with love, gentle words, and the comforting smell of wood and fire.

Life was not easy for the family. Work was scarce, and some days there was barely enough food. Even so, Hansel and Gretel tried to stay cheerful. They helped their father, played quietly near the cottage, and shared everything they had.

At night, when they lay in their beds beneath warm blankets, Hansel would often whisper stories to Gretel until she fell asleep.

“Someday,” he would say softly, “things will be better. And no matter what happens, we will always stay together.”

Those words made Gretel feel safe.

One evening, as the fire crackled low and shadows danced along the walls, Hansel and Gretel lay awake listening. From the next room came worried voices. Their father sounded tired, and the night felt heavier than usual.

Gretel squeezed Hansel’s hand.
“I’m scared,” she whispered.

Hansel leaned closer.
“Don’t be. Whatever comes, we’ll be brave.”

Eventually, the voices faded, and the children drifted into sleep.

The next morning, the forest looked calm and peaceful. Sunlight streamed through the trees, and birds sang gently overhead. Hansel and Gretel were asked to walk into the woods to gather sticks for the fire.

As they walked, Hansel quietly bent down and picked up small white stones from the path. One by one, he dropped them behind him, careful not to be seen.

Gretel noticed.
“What are you doing?” she whispered.

Hansel smiled reassuringly.
“Just making sure we can always find our way back.”

After a long walk, they reached a clearing. The forest grew quiet, and the air felt cool. When evening came and no one returned, Gretel’s heart began to beat faster.

Hansel looked up at the sky.
“Wait,” he said softly.

The moon rose slowly, casting silver light across the forest floor. The white stones began to glow gently, like tiny stars scattered along the path.

Hand in hand, Hansel and Gretel followed the shining trail all the way home.

Their father was overjoyed. He hugged them tightly and held them for a long time, as if afraid to let go.

But the days passed, and life grew even harder. One morning, the children were once again led deep into the forest. This time, Hansel had only a small piece of bread in his pocket.

As they walked, he broke off tiny crumbs and let them fall behind him, hoping they would guide them home.

The forest seemed different now. The trees stood taller and closer together. The light dimmed, and unfamiliar sounds echoed through the branches.

When night fell, the children waited patiently. But when the moon rose, the path behind them was empty. Birds and little animals had eaten every crumb.

Gretel’s eyes filled with tears.
“We’re lost,” she whispered.

Hansel wrapped his arm around her.
“We’re tired,” he said gently, “but we’re not alone. We’ll keep going together.”

They walked for a long time, resting when they could, listening to the quiet forest around them. At last, Gretel stopped suddenly.

“Hansel… I see something.”

Ahead stood a small house, glowing softly in the forest. It looked warm and welcoming. The walls shimmered as if made from sweet treats, and the air smelled comforting and sweet.

Carefully, they stepped closer.

The door opened, and an old woman appeared. Her voice was calm, and her smile seemed gentle.

“You poor children,” she said softly. “You must be tired. Come inside and rest.”

Inside, the house was warm and peaceful. A table stood ready with food, and soft beds waited nearby. Hansel and Gretel ate slowly, thankful for the warmth and quiet.

Soon, sleep came easily.

But something was not right.

The next morning, Gretel awoke alone. The house felt different. Too quiet.

She searched and called for Hansel. At last, she found him nearby, frightened but alive.

Gretel took a deep breath. She remembered Hansel’s bravery. She remembered his kindness.

Thinking carefully and moving patiently, Gretel found a way to free her brother. Together, they ran from the house, not stopping until the forest surrounded them once more.

They ran and ran, until their legs grew tired and the trees began to look familiar.

At last, the cottage appeared.

Their father ran toward them, tears streaming down his face. He held them close, and for a long time, no one spoke.

From that day on, life slowly changed. The forest once again provided work, and the cottage grew warmer and brighter.

Every night, Hansel and Gretel lay safely in their beds.

And when the wind whispered through the trees, it no longer sounded frightening. It sounded like a promise:

No matter how lost you feel, kindness, courage, and staying together will always guide you home.

And with that comforting thought, they closed their eyes and drifted peacefully into sleep.
