It’s dark outside, and the light from the TV flickers in the room. Sarah is cozy on the couch because Mom is so engrossed in a movie that she has completely forgotten about Sarah and the time.
“Out! It’s way past your bedtime, Sarah! Off to bed,” says Mom.
“But it’s so cozy here with you,” protests Sarah. “Can’t I please stay just a little longer?”
But Mom won’t budge. Sarah trudges slowly up the stairs. “Ugh, it’s so unfair. I always have to go to bed first, and you get to stay up,” she mutters. She stops in front of the door to her brother Ethan’s room. Strange sounds are coming from inside. Sarah opens the door. Ethan is lying on the floor, listening to loud music while playing air guitar. Sarah giggles, slips inside, and lies down in Ethan’s bean bag. It’s cozy, and she closes her eyes.
“Sarah, what are you doing here?” She must have fallen asleep, because now she wakes up as Ethan pokes her in the stomach. “Shoo! You’re supposed to be in bed. And I want to listen to music in peace,” he says. Sarah shuffles out of the room. She can hear that Dad is sitting and typing in his office.
“Hi Dad, did you just get a good idea?” Sarah asks as she walks over to him.
“What? Yeah, yeah…” Dad mumbles distractedly and keeps pounding the keyboard. He’s so focused on writing that he doesn’t even notice Sarah crawling into her little den under his desk.
“That’s it! Done for today!” Dad says a little later, stretching his arms and legs. He bumps into Sarah under the desk with his foot.
“What the heck, are you sitting there?” he says. “Off to bed with you! I’ll come and read a bedtime story.”
But Sarah doesn’t want to hear a bedtime story. She was just getting comfortable in the den. She runs down to the kitchen, where Max is lying in his dog bed. She lies down next to him. Max growls a little but shifts over so there’s room for her. His fur is soft and warm. And Sarah’s eyes start to close…
Mom and Dad find Sarah asleep in the dog bed. She wakes up as Dad carries her up the stairs. “I don’t want to go to bed,” she says.
Dad smiles. “Okay, then I have an idea.”
So they all lie down in Mom and Dad’s big bed. Ethan and Benny come too. And then Dad reads a really good bedtime story to all of them.
Sarah snuggles under the duvet. “Today, I’m not the first one to go to bed,” she says contentedly.
And then she falls asleep.
