Liam’s First Bus Ride

by

Liam stood with his school bag on his back, looking down the road. Today, he was going to take the school bus for the very first time. Not for his first day of school – no, he had already been in school for a whole week! But until now, Mom had driven him every morning.

“It’s not dangerous, is it?” Liam asked, looking up at Mom, who was holding his hand.

“No, sweetheart,” she replied. “The bus goes straight to the school, and the driver knows you’re coming. And I’ll wave until I can’t see you anymore.”

Far down the road, the blue bus came rumbling. It had round headlights like eyes and a big windshield that looked like a smile. The door opened with a swoosh, and out stepped the driver – a woman wearing a yellow cap and a friendly grin.

“Good morning, Liam!” she said. “I’ve heard you’re a new passenger.”

Liam looked at Mom. She nodded and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “You’ll do great.”

He climbed onto the bus and found a seat in the middle. His heart was beating a little fast, but not in a bad way – more like when you’re about to try something new and exciting.

At the next stop, a boy with curly hair and a big lunchbox covered in superheroes got on. He sat down next to Liam.

“Hi,” he said. “I’m Malik. Is this your first ride?”

Liam nodded and smiled.

“My dad says the blue bus is the best in town,” Malik said.

“It can almost fly if you close your eyes and listen,” said Malik.

Liam closed his eyes for fun. The bus swayed a little, the engine rumbled, and it actually did feel a bit like flying – just a little.

When they reached the school, Liam got off the bus with Malik. The sun was shining, and the school stood waiting with its doors wide open.

“If you want, we can play after lunch,” said Malik. “I know a place with the best stones to jump on.”

Liam nodded. “I’d like that.”

They walked toward the door together, while the morning sun gleamed in the school’s windows. And even though Liam still missed Mom’s hand a little, his own steps felt stronger now.

That evening, Liam sat at the dining table with colored pencils spread out in front of him. He drew a big, blue bus with round eyes and a wide smile. Inside the bus were two small figures laughing – one with curls and the other with freckles and a backpack.

“That’s you and Malik, isn’t it?” Mom asked, sitting down beside him.

Liam nodded. “We almost flew the whole way to school.”

Mom smiled and looked at the drawing for a long time. “It looks like a really good ride.”

Liam rubbed his sleepy eyes. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

“Then you’d better get some sleep,” Mom said and walked him to his room. She pulled the covers up over him and kissed his hair.

“Goodnight, my love,” she whispered.

“Goodnight, Mom,” Liam said with a smile.
