It was Christmas Eve. Snow was falling softly outside as Santa Claus tiptoed into a house to fill the children’s stockings. He worked quickly and quietly – until he noticed something moving.
In front of the fireplace sat a little mouse, staring at him curiously with wide eyes.
“Hello there, little friend,” said Santa with a smile. “Merry Christmas!”
“The same to you, Mr. Santa,” replied the mouse politely.
Santa chuckled. “You can stay and watch while I work,” he said, continuing to fill the stockings with toys.
When he was done, he patted his belly and said,
“There! No more room left.”
The mouse shook his head and said with a twinkle in his eye,
“Oh, I think there’s room for one more thing.”
Santa laughed again. “Do you think I don’t know how to fill a stocking? I’ve been doing this for a hundred years!”
“Then let me try,” said the mouse cheekily.
Santa shrugged. “Alright then, show me what you can do.”
The mouse scampered over to the stocking, nibbled a tiny hole near the toe, and said,
“There! I’ve added one more thing – a hole! That wasn’t there before!”
Santa burst out laughing.
“You’re a clever little fellow,” he said. “You deserve a Christmas cheese for that one!”
And ever since that night, Santa has proudly shown off the stocking with the hole whenever someone asks if the story about the mouse is true.
