Freddy looked out the kitchen window and sighed. It was far too cold and windy to play outside.
He had played with all his toys. He had finished reading his favorite book. He had cleaned his room, and he had even organized his sock drawer. Now there was nothing left to do but stare out the window and watch the leaves fly by.
“I’m bored,” he sighed. “Can I go outside?”
“No,” his father replied gently. “There’s a big storm coming, and I don’t want you getting caught in it. But we can find something to do together indoors.”
“Indoors is boring,” Freddy groaned. “I want to go out and play.”
“Sorry, but that’s not possible,” his father said firmly. “Would you like to bake with me? We could make your favorite cookies.”
“Okay then…” mumbled Freddy, though he really didn’t feel like it. He watched as his father poured the ingredients into a bowl and let out a long sigh.
“Come on,” his father said. “Help me mix the dough.”
He handed Freddy a wooden spoon, and soon they were both stirring eagerly.
“Brrrrrr!” said his father, pretending to be a mixer.
“Brrrrrrr!” echoed Freddy, who, to his own surprise, actually started to have fun.
Before long, the cookies were ready to go into the warm oven.
“Now we just have to wait for them to bake,” his father said.
“But that takes forever!” Freddy complained.
“Sit down, and I’ll tell you a story while we wait,” his father suggested. “Once upon a time…”
Just as Freddy’s father finished his story, the cookies were done too. Freddy immediately took a bite of one.
“This is good,” said Freddy, licking his lips. “But doing something together with you was even better, Dad. Can we do it again tomorrow?”
