Once upon a time, in a quiet little village, there lived a kind-hearted man who always tried to help others. He helped his neighbors carry water, shared food with hungry children, and even cared for stray animals that no one else wanted. His heart was full of kindness, and he believed that every creature deserved a second chance.
One cold winter morning, as he walked through the forest to gather firewood, he noticed something lying in the snow. It was a serpent, stiff and unmoving, its body frozen from the icy wind. The man felt sorry for the poor creature.
“Oh, you poor thing,” he whispered. “You must be so cold. If I don’t help you, you’ll surely die.”
Ignoring the chill in his own hands, he carefully picked up the serpent and tucked it into his warm coat. He hurried home, placed it near the fire, and gave it warmth until it slowly began to move again.
At first, the serpent seemed calm, stretching and breathing in the heat of the flames. The man smiled, feeling proud that he had saved a life. But then, as the serpent regained its strength, it suddenly turned on him. With a hiss, it struck and bit his hand.
The man pulled back in shock. “Why would you do that?” he cried. “I saved you! I gave you warmth and kindness!”
The serpent only hissed again. “It is in my nature,” it replied. “No matter how much warmth you give me, I will always be what I am.” And with that, it slithered out of the house and disappeared into the forest.
The man sat quietly, holding his hand, and thought about what had happened. He realized that while kindness is a beautiful gift, it is also wise to be careful. Not every creature—or person—will return goodness with goodness. Some hearts cannot change just because we wish them to.
That night, as the stars shone brightly above the village, the man told his story to the children. And his words carried a gentle lesson:
Be kind, but also be wise. True friends show their hearts through their actions, not just through their need.
