The Penguin Who Wanted to Sparkle

One moonlit evening, a CRACK echoed from the mother penguin’s egg! A tiny beak poked through, then a head, and finally two wings and two orange feet. A baby penguin had hatched.

“Ooh, how they sparkle!” squeaked the chick as it looked up at the twinkling stars in the sky. Then it noticed a funny fish leaping from the ocean waves — SPLASH! It was shiny and glimmering.
“I want to shine too,” squeaked the baby penguin.

Soon after, it began to snow. The chick saw the glittering snowflakes drifting down.
“If I can catch some, I can sprinkle them on my feathers,” thought the chick. “Then I’ll sparkle too.”

The penguin chick ran round and round, trying to catch the snowflakes, but they melted the moment they touched her wings. Then she found a drift of white powdery snow, sparkling in the moonlight.
“Now I’ll sparkle for sure!” she chirped and rolled in the snowdrift.

But just then, the moon disappeared behind a cloud, and the chick’s feathers didn’t sparkle at all.

“Hmm, maybe I can catch a star,” thought the chick and jumped as high as she could. But no matter how high she leapt, she couldn’t reach a star.

“What are you doing?” asked the other penguins.
“I’m trying to catch something that sparkles,” the chick explained.

Suddenly, a whale swam past.
“All that jumping and rolling looks exhausting!” laughed the whale. “Hop onto my back instead.”

Everyone agreed it was a brilliant idea — even the baby penguin. One by one, the penguins slid down the whale’s back and splashed into the sparkling sea. SPLASH! The baby penguin leapt up and shook her wet feathers in the sunlight.

“Look!” shouted the other penguins. “You’re sparkling all over!”

“So this is how you sparkle,” cried the penguin chick, dancing in the snow.
“By having fun in the sunshine. Come on, everyone. Let’s do it again!”
