Once upon a time, there was a shy little octopus who lived in a quiet corner of the coral reef. It rarely came out, and whenever it bumped into someone, it would squeeze itself into the nearest crack and hide – octopuses can fit into places where no one else can.
One day, the octopus was hiding when it suddenly heard a cry.
“Help!” shouted a tiny voice. “It’s me, the crab! I fell into a crevice, and I can’t get out!”
The octopus peeked out from its hiding place and watched as the other sea creatures tried to rescue their friend.
First, the seahorse tried squeezing into the crack… then the clownfish… and finally the moray eel. But they were all far too big. The octopus knew it had to help.
“Let me try,” it said shyly.
To everyone’s surprise, the octopus squeezed its rubbery body deep into the crevice and pulled the crab free with one of its long tentacles. Everyone cheered.
“My hero!” sighed the little crab with a smile.
The octopus blushed, but it was also very happy. Maybe making friends was not so difficult after all.
