Tommy and Tristan were brothers. They agreed on many things – they both loved robots, they both hated broccoli, and they both dreamed of winning the big robot competition. But there were also things they never agreed on. They supported different soccer teams, and at the dinner table they were always trying to sneak broccoli onto each other’s plates.
In their bedrooms, they worked separately on their robots. Screws clinked, wires twisted, and ideas buzzed in the air. Each of them dreamed of winning – and of beating his brother.
At last, competition day arrived.
The organizer walked around asking the participants what their robots could do.
“Mine is super strong,” Tristan said proudly. “It can lift anything!”
“And mine is super fast,” said Tommy, gently nudging him aside. “It’s faster than a jet plane!”
Just as they were at their most excited, the organizer’s phone rang. She listened, sighed, and put it away.
“I have bad news,” she said. “The judge’s car has broken down several miles from here. Without him, we can’t hold the competition. I’m afraid I have to cancel it.”
Tommy and Tristan looked at each other. Cancel it? After all their hard work?
Then Tommy had an idea.
And Tristan had the exact same one.
If they joined forces, they could build something even better.
Something strong.
Something fast.
Something amazing.
They got to work right away. They hammered, welded, and filed. They argued, laughed, and helped each other. At last, a gigantic super robot stood before them.
They powered up the control panel and typed in the code.
BEEP! BEEP!
The robot nodded.
ZOOM!
It was gone.
The crowd held its breath. The seconds felt long. Could it really work?
Then the robot appeared again on the horizon. It came closer – carrying the judge’s car high above its head. Gently, it set the car down. The door opened, and the judge stepped out with a big smile.
“Who built this incredible robot?” he asked.
Tommy and Tristan stepped forward.
“That’s easy,” said the judge. “I’ve already found the winners. You both win!”
The brothers looked at each other and smiled.
It felt great to win – but even better to do it together.
