Once upon a time, there was an old king who had three sons. The two eldest sons were confident and loved to boast, but the youngest son was quiet and shy.
The king loved all of his sons equally, and he could not decide who should inherit the kingdom when he was gone. So he decided to give them a challenge.
“The one who brings me the finest carpet shall become king after my death,” he said. Then he tossed three feathers into the air. “Each of you must follow your own feather.”
One feather flew to the east, another flew to the west, and the third drifted only a short distance before landing on the ground near the castle.
“We’ll travel east and west,” laughed the two older brothers. They were certain their little brother would never find a fine carpet so close to the castle.
The youngest son sat down and wondered what he should do. Suddenly, he noticed a hidden trapdoor in the ground. He opened it, walked down a flight of steps, and found himself in a dark underground chamber. There, he met a large toad sitting beside a great chest.
The young man gathered his courage and asked, “Dear Mr. Toad, would you please help me find the finest carpet in the kingdom?”
The toad opened the chest and handed the boy the most beautiful carpet he had ever seen.
The two older brothers became angry and jealous. They begged their father to give them another challenge.
The old king agreed and said, “The one who brings me the most beautiful ring shall inherit the kingdom.”
Once again, he tossed three feathers into the air. The same thing happened. The two older brothers traveled east and west, while the youngest son remained near the castle.
After his brothers had left, he returned to the underground chamber.
“Dear Mr. Toad, I must find the most beautiful ring.”
The toad smiled at the young man before opening the chest and lifting out a sparkling ring covered in diamonds.
When the king saw the ring, he could hardly believe his eyes.
“You, my youngest son, shall inherit the kingdom.”
The two older brothers begged their father for one more challenge, but this time he refused.
When the king died, the youngest son took his place on the throne. He became a brave and kind king – especially toward toads.
