Long ago, all the trolls were banished to a tiny, foggy land beneath gray skies at the very edge of the world. This happened because one old, wicked troll had bothered the goats one too many times.
At first, the trolls were happy in their new home. They spent their days picking their enormous noses and making rude noises, and they no longer had to spend all their time scaring those annoying humans and goats.
There was only one problem.
The trolls had always lived alone beneath bridges and inside caves. Many of them had never even seen another troll before! But in their little land, where there wasn’t much room, all their different smells mixed together into an unbelievable STENCH!
For the first time, they noticed that their fur was full of food scraps, their claws were filthy, and their breath was so terrible that it made tears run down their cheeks.
A shy little troll named Toby was so embarrassed by the way he smelled that he finally gathered his courage and spoke up.
“Maybe we should take a bath,” he muttered.
The other trolls stared at him suspiciously.
But Toby had made up his mind.
He walked down to the river and carefully dipped one slimy toe into the water. Then he waded in up to his knees, and finally he plunged all the way under.
It felt wonderful and refreshing!
He laughed and splashed and scrubbed himself so enthusiastically that more and more curious trolls began gathering along the riverbank.
Before long, they were all tumbling around in the water together. And when they were finished, none of them smelled bad anymore!
It was the beginning of a whole new life for the trolls.
Now all the trolls are clean.
They spend their time bathing in the river, combing their silky-soft fur, brushing their gleaming white tusks, and trimming their perfectly clean claws.
However, they still enjoy some of their old favorite hobbies, such as making rude noises, shouting silly things at the top of their lungs, picking their enormous noses, and throwing boogers at one another!
