Vera’s Big Egg

It was spring, and the sun shone brightly over the farm by the river.

Vera the duck sat by the riverbank, quacking impatiently.

She had been sitting on her nest for several weeks, but none of her six eggs had hatched. Vera shifted position and preened her feathers. She turned the eggs and polished them. She loved her eggs, but she was beginning to doubt whether they would ever hatch. Suddenly, there was a CRACK!

Out came a tiny, fluffy duckling. Vera was overjoyed.

Shortly after, the other eggs began to crack, and Vera was suddenly surrounded by five fluffy ducklings. Only the largest egg remained.

Vera rolled the big egg back under her and warmed it with her soft feathers. She waited and waited, but the egg didn’t hatch.

“Why don’t you just leave it?” asked the cow. “You have five lovely little ducklings. There’s clearly something wrong with the last one.”

“No,” quacked Vera, wrapping her wings around the egg.

“I don’t think it’s your egg at all,” clucked the wise old hen. “It’s far too big to be a duck egg.”

“Yes,” neighed the horse. “I’ve heard of birds laying their eggs in other birds’ nests. Quite dreadful, really.”

But Vera stayed on the last egg and waited.

And one sunny afternoon, there was finally a CRACK! Vera quacked excitedly. All the animals on the farm gathered around the nest to see the new duckling.

“I bet it’s a gosling,” whispered the hen.

“I think it’s a cygnet,” neighed the horse.

Everyone held their breath as the egg hatched…

Out came two tiny ducklings. They were twins!

Vera quacked proudly. She had always known the big egg was special. Now she had seven perfect little ducklings.

“Come along, children,” she called proudly and led her ducklings down to the river.
