The Pirate King was in trouble. Another pirate had attacked his ship. They had fought a fierce battle. Even though he was outnumbered, the Pirate King fought bravely. But in the end, his men abandoned him in favor of the other ship.
“How can I rule the seven seas when I’m all alone?” he sniffled as he sailed toward a small deserted island. “I might as well stay here. What else is there?”
But true pirates are rarely sad for long. “I belong at sea!” he bellowed. “I can be both crew and captain!” He leapt back onto his ship, put on his pirate hat, and set sail. And off he went in search of treasure, the pirate flag fluttering in the wind.
A few days later, the Pirate King spotted another ship. He aimed all his cannons at it and… BOOM! BOOM!
“We surrender!” the sailors screamed.
The Pirate King made them all walk the plank and took their treasure. There were chests full of diamonds, pearls, rubies, and gold coins. He stashed the chests on his ship and sailed toward land to bury the treasure.
At long last, he found a deserted beach. It was perfect!
The Pirate King began digging a deep, deep hole. He placed the chests inside and covered them with sand.
“Now no other pirate can find my treasure,” he said.
“Now it’s time to find a new crew.”
The Pirate King set sail again. He had only been traveling for a few hours when he spotted a man clinging to a piece of driftwood in the water, dressed in rags.
“What happened to you?” the Pirate King asked.
“My ship sank,” the man said. “Won’t you please help me?”
“How about becoming the first mate on a pirate ship led by the fearless and brave Pirate King?” he asked.
The man gladly accepted the offer and climbed aboard.
The Pirate King and his new first mate sailed on, and before long, they had filled the ship with pirates. But in the meantime, rumors of the Pirate King’s treasure had reached a town on the other side of the forest behind the deserted beach.
“Pirates love to bury their treasure,” a man said to himself. “If I dig a hole deep enough, I can’t help but find it!”
So he bought a shovel and began to dig. He dug a hole so deep and long that it stretched all the way under the town, beneath the forest, and down to the beach. He dug and dug until he finally emerged through the golden sand of the beach. But when he climbed out of the hole, a big surprise awaited him.
The Pirate King was standing there, staring at him!
The beach was swarming with pirates, and their cutlasses sparkled in the sunlight. They roared when they saw the man.
“A thief!” shouted the Pirate King. “Make him walk the plank!”
The man was terrified. Before the pirates could catch him, he jumped back down into the hole and ran all the way home through the tunnel he had dug beneath the forest and town.
“I’m staying far away from pirates from now on!” he shouted.
The Pirate King dug up his treasure and then climbed back aboard his ship.
“Raise the anchor!” the Pirate King shouted.
“Now that I have my treasure and my crew, I can finally rule the seven seas again!”
