Far to the north, where the mountains reflected themselves in the water and the wind always whispered softly, there lay a small Viking village by the fjord. The houses were built from wood and turf, and when evening came, the air smelled of campfires, saltwater, and fresh wind.
This was where Eli lived.
Eli was not the biggest boy in the village. He was not the fastest either. But he was the one who noticed things. The sounds. The pauses between words. And the things others did not always see.
That evening, Eli sat alone by the edge of the fjord. The sun was setting, and the sky glowed with gentle colors – orange, purple, and blue. The water was almost completely still, as if the fjord itself was getting ready to sleep.
Eli pulled his knees close and listened.
He could hear
the waves gently brushing against the stones
a bird calling far away
and his own breathing, calm and slow
Behind him, the grown-ups lit the fires in the village. Soon there would be food, and soon everyone would go inside. But Eli had asked to stay a little longer.
“Just until the fjord becomes completely quiet,” he had said.
And now, it almost was.
Suddenly, Eli heard a soft sound behind him.
A raven landed on a stone near the water. It was black as night, with shiny, watchful eyes. It did not say a word. It simply sat there, looking out over the fjord – just like Eli.
“Hello,” Eli whispered.
The raven tilted its head slightly, as if it had heard him.
Eli knew that ravens often followed the Vikings. Some said they knew more than they showed. But this raven did not seem dangerous. It seemed… calm.
They sat there together in silence.
Then something strange happened – but in a good way.
The wind stopped completely.
The water no longer moved.
Even the sounds from the village faded away for a moment.
It was as if the whole world took a breath – and held it.
Eli felt a warm calm spread through his body. Not the kind that makes you sleepy right away, but the kind that tells you everything is exactly as it should be.
“I think it’s bedtime,” Eli said softly.
The raven slowly spread its wings. Before it flew away, it looked at Eli one last time. Then it lifted into the air and disappeared into the darker sky.
Eli stood up and walked home.
Inside the house, it was warm. His mother placed a blanket over him, and the fire crackled gently. Outside, the stars appeared one by one.
As Eli closed his eyes, he could still hear the fjord – quiet, safe, and awake, even while he slept.
And as the village settled into rest, Eli drifted into sleep, ready for new adventures tomorrow.
Good night.
