Coco the crocodile was lying alone in the warm sunshine by the edge of the lake.
“What a boring day this has been. I wish I had someone to talk to, but there’s nobody here,” he thought.
Suddenly, Monty the monkey came close to the lake, hoping to catch some fish. As he got nearer, he heard a creaking voice coming from a tree.
“Watch out! There’s a giant crocodile over there!”
It was a squirrel. Monty heard the warning and turned in the direction the squirrel was pointing.
At that moment, Coco smiled at Monty as their eyes met for the first time.
Monty let out a terrible scream and ran away.
“Was there something on my face? What did I do wrong?” Coco wondered, confused.
“I was only trying to give him a friendly smile!” he thought sadly.
Coco was grumpy for the rest of the day after what had happened.
“Why can’t I make a friend?” he sighed.
Just then, Peter the bird flew down from a nearby branch and landed on top of Coco’s head.
“Why do you look so sad today?” Peter asked.
Coco replied,
“Is my face scary? I smiled at a monkey, and he ran away in fear.”
“Oh, Coco,” said Peter, “when you smile and show those sharp teeth, it gives everyone goosebumps. Don’t you realize that?”
“Really? From now on, I’ll keep my mouth closed all the time – except when I’m eating,” Coco answered.
For the next few days, Coco kept his mouth tightly shut so he wouldn’t scare anyone.
But as time passed, his mouth began to smell because bits of food were stuck around his teeth after keeping his mouth closed for days without cleaning it.
Soon, one of his teeth began to hurt badly.
One day, Geo the giraffe spotted him from a distance.
“Wow, that’s a huge crocodile!” Geo exclaimed.
Suddenly, Peter appeared and flew over to Coco.
Coco said,
“Peter! Would you please check my teeth? It’s starting to hurt more and more.”
Peter replied,
“Of course I can help check them. I can clean them too.”
Coco opened his mouth wide, and Peter flew inside, pecking away the food stuck between his teeth.
“Wow! A little bird just flew into that giant crocodile’s mouth!” Geo said out loud as he watched in amazement.
“I wonder if he’s going to eat the bird?” Geo thought nervously.
Monty the monkey, who was nearby, came over to see what was happening.
After a little while, Peter flew back out after helping clean all the food from Coco’s teeth.
“Don’t worry, Geo!” Monty laughed.
“It turns out crocodiles aren’t so scary after all.”
